Lake Tahoe snow conditions continue to be in fine mid-winter form even with the lengthening days. Temperatures have been downright frigid the past few nights with thermometers bottoming out at just about the (0) zero number! Days have been in the mid 30′s with cloudy and on again off again snow showers. The storm that hit the Lake Tahoe basin earlier in the week left in it’s wake nearly 2 feet at the highest elevations and set the stage for an impressive powder weekend with plenty of stashes still left to be had. Kirkwood claims to have picked up around 28 inches in the past week.

The upcoming week may prove to interesting especially the first part with a cold Gulf of Alaska low forecasted to drop into the Lake Tahoe basin sometime late Monday into Tuesday. Precipitation will not be terribly impressive but the quality should by dynamite! After that things will dry out until another storm rears it’s head next weekend.

HEAVENLY CONDITIONS Q&A
Q: What’s open?
A: We have 18 lifts and 20 trails open at this time, accessing 11 miles of the finest surface
conditions at Lake Tahoe. We’ve got 10 lifts and 15 trails in Nevada, and eight lifts and five trails
in California. There’s no connection between Nevada and California at this time, so you’ve got
to choose between the two sides. Both offer Ski and Ride School locations serving every ability
level. We’ve got Tahoe’s best terrain park in Nevada, but no terrain parks in California. But no
matter which side you choose, there is plenty of acreage, variety and amazing snow surfaces.
Q: How are you able to open so much relative to your competition?
A: Here at Heavenly, we’ve got the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system. The crew has
been hard at work this year, logging 744 hours of snowmaking to date, compared to 518 hours
at this point last year.
Q: I hear it hasn’t snowed in Tahoe all season.
A: It snows every night here at Heavenly. In fact, it’s snowed around the clock for the last four
consecutive days. We’ve got the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and the crew has put
in 744 hours so far this season to bring you 11 miles of the best snow surfaces Tahoe has to
offer.
Q: How is it looking for the holidays?
A: Fantastic. We’ve got the best snow surface conditions on 11 miles of open terrain. We’re
making snow whenever temperatures allow to get even more terrain open. We’re currently
working on the connection between California and Nevada, as well as the Boulder area. We’ve
also got a fun lineup of events at our Village called Heavenly Holidays, featuring photos in a
giant snow globe with Santa, ice capades, ice sculptors, concerts and a family‐friendly New
Year’s Eve celebration. We’ve also got Tahoe’s ultimate apres party happening from 3:30 to
5:30 every night with DJs, dancers and half‐priced drinks.
Q: It’s all artificial snow, right?
A: That’s correct, but the only difference between natural and machine‐made snow is the shape
of the snow crystal. Machine‐made snow consists of cold air and water … just like natural
snow. We’re making high‐quality snow, with full coverage on every open trail, so you can be
confident that you’re skiing or riding on a reliable, consistent snow surface. And our amazing
grooming team is out every night with state‐of‐the‐art equipment to make sure the surface is
just right in the morning.
Q: So I have to choose one side or the other?
A: That’s correct. We recommend the Nevada side at this time. It’s got the most open terrain,
Lake Tahoe’s best terrain park, and top‐to‐bottom skiing or riding with nearly 2,400 vertical
feet, the most at Lake Tahoe. However, if you’re taking a lesson, California is a great option with
terrain for every ability level. And while you can’t ski from side, we do have frequent, free
shuttle service running between the three open base areas. UPDATE You can now ski/ride between Nevada and California but niot back to Nevada.Shuttles are available.
Q: What if I don’t ski or ride?
A: We’ve got sightseeing and tubing at the top of our Gondola. We’ll also offer Tahoe’s ultimate
apres ski party at Tamarack lodge from 3:30 to 5:30, featuring half‐priced drinks, DJs and
dancers.
‐ We will continue to update all the various communications outlets daily over the next several weeks to
keep you informed about terrain openings and mountain status.
‐ Please check www.skiheavenly.com or http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/SkiHeavenly
often to see photos and stay completely informed.

I know it is only September 27 but looking ahead with the aid of NOAA it appears there will be a major pattern change starting next week and lasting for a couple of weeks.
Lake Tahoe is having a banner snow year and the conditions for all Lake Tahoe resorts could hardly be better. It is obvious why Orbitz declared once again that the Lake Tahoe region is the top destination for their travelers booking air and lodging packages. Lodging numbers are up and skier visits have risen quite dramatically as well. The timing of the stormy patters has also helped with periods of stromy weather and then long breaks of Tahoe’s famous sunshine.

Looking ahead there appears to be even more snow on the way with another El Nino driven jet stream making it’s way across the Pacific. These storms may not be as intense as the storms earlier this month but they do appear to be pretty juicy! Stay tuned.

Well, I have been away from this blog for a bit building a couple of new Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental sites but I really wanted to get back and discuss the upcoming 7-10 days which may make for an epic March!

The models are really coming together this morning with a series of storms moving toward the Lake Tahoe Basin, each a bit stronger and colder than the previous. The snow totals if everything works out in our favor could top 3-6 feet by the end of next weekend which would set up the ski and board resorts for an epic late-winter and spring! If you have not booked a trip with Pinnacle Lake Tahoe Getaways yet you might want to as what usually happens in these situations is a rush to book cabins after a big dump!

I digress. The first storm moving in now is much warmer than the subsequent storms will be therefore, rain will more than likely fall below 7000-7500 feet. The big story with this first storm will be the winds. A high wind advisory has been posted for Lake Tahoe and the Reno area through Monday with potentially damaging winds developing ahead of the precipitation. Once the initial front passes snow levels will come crashing down to below 5,000 feet on Monday and Monday night. The rest of the week the precipitation from the upcoming storms should be all snow with very dry and powdery snow falling in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding Lake Tahoe resorts.

The weather service will in all likelihood issue a winter storm watch on Monday for the next storm due in Tuesday into Wednesday as the potential for a major winter storm now looks likely. 1-3 feet of snow could fall from this one and looking down the line a potent system for next weekend is taking shape which could produce another 1-3 feet of new snow.

All of this is great news for Lake Tahoe resorts, businesses and our guests but the biggest impact may be a significant increase in our snow pack and the subsequent spring and summer water supplies for California and Nevada. Stay tuned for more Lake Tahoe weather updates and ski and board conditions!
