One of the best ways to enjoy the amazing weather we have in Lake Tahoe is to head out with some friends and play a round of disc golf. It is a great way to enjoy nature and spend some time outside on a beautiful day. There are three different courses in the Lake Tahoe area and each of them offer different obstacles and terrain that make each unique. The first course “Bijou” is located off of Al Tahoe right by the skate park, and is the closest to most south shore guests. With 27 holes you can play all afternoon. This course has the most trees of any of Lake Tahoe’s disc golf courses so bring you’re A game. There are many picnic tables scattered throughout the course so pack a lunch and hang out for a while. If your playing early season watch out for the sixth hole because you may land in “the lake” it normally evaporates by the middle of summer though. All in all a great course that will challenge most and the games go quick because of the lack of many elevation changes and hilly terrain. The second and most challenging course is located in the park in Zephyr Cove. Bring some good shoes because you will encounter many elevation changes and steep grades. This course has beautiful lake views from a number of holes and will really challenge even the best of players. Pay attention to your drives because it is not uncommon to lose a disc… there is a lot of thick brush and quite a bit of trees. This course is also the least crowded so even though it is challenging it is good for beginners because they can take their time and even take practice shots. If you like challenging yourself this is the place for you… just be ready to climb some hills. The third course is actually located on the mountain at Kirkwood. This course is not for the unfit… the base of the course is at 7800’ and you go up from there. With 18 challenging holes that weave throughout the mountain it is a great way to see what the ski area looks like without tons of snow on it. Take the beautiful drive out to Kirkwood and play in the sun you won’t be disappointed. Whatever course you choose they are all a great time and the best part FREE! So get out and play a round and we’ll see you out on the course.

Lake Tahoe snow conditions continue to be in fine mid-winter form even with the lengthening days. Temperatures have been downright frigid the past few nights with thermometers bottoming out at just about the (0) zero number! Days have been in the mid 30’s with cloudy and on again off again snow showers. The storm that hit the Lake Tahoe basin earlier in the week left in it’s wake nearly 2 feet at the highest elevations and set the stage for an impressive powder weekend with plenty of stashes still left to be had. Kirkwood claims to have picked up around 28 inches in the past week.

The upcoming week may prove to interesting especially the first part with a cold Gulf of Alaska low forecasted to drop into the Lake Tahoe basin sometime late Monday into Tuesday. Precipitation will not be terribly impressive but the quality should by dynamite! After that things will dry out until another storm rears it’s head next weekend.

Carson Pass to Winnemucca Lake – Lake Tahoe Hiking Trails

The trail from Carson Pass to beautiful 9,000 foot Winnemucca Lake is an area favorite, known for its gorgeous wildflowers and excellent views. This is a great hike for photographers, because of the picture perfect scenery, and people with dogs, because of the small elevation change and rewarding sights. If you are planning to take pictures on your way, the sun will be on your left if you start in the morning and on your right in the afternoon, as you progress roughly south-southwest to Winnemucca Lake. The moderate 4.2 mile out and back hike begins with a gentle climb through the forest featuring filtered glimpses of Round Top Mountain. About a half mile into the hike, Frog Lake will appear on your left, marking the end of the elevation change. A few different varieties of flowers can be found here. On the hillside to the west of the lake, you can find rare Wood Roses on occasion, and you can see a big field of wild iris if you circle around to the east side of the lake.

From this point on all the way to Winnemucca Lake, you’re in an open area, brimming with vibrant, colorful wildflowers. Scarlet gilia, Indian paintbrush, blue flax, sierra lilies, and numerous other species are scattered as far as the eye can see. As the trail edges along the western flank of Elephant’s Back, there are a few flowing streams and wet areas where you can encounter lupine, columbine, monkeyflower, and, if you’re lucky, small blue butterflies called Melissa Blues. Soon you’ll reach Winnemucca Lake, a great place for swimming, fishing, a lunch break, or letting the dogs play. This is a great place to explore and climb large boulders. The north face of Round Top Mountain falls into the lake, and another field of iris is located to the northwest of the lake. There is a trail that goes along the north side of the lake, and for extreme hikers, you can also reach Round Top Lake and Fourth of July Lake for about an 8.8 mile hike.

To get to Woods Lake Campground, where the trail begins, take Highway 88 east. After passing Kirkwood Ski Resort and Caples Lake, but before you reach Carson Pass, look for the campground on your right. Follow the road to the day use parking lot. It’s generally a good idea to arrive early, as this is a popular hike and parking has a tendency to fill up fast.
